Something Blue: Getting Orbs of Transmutation in Path of Exile

In Path of Exile, orbs make the world go round. Whether you plan on using them as currency or simply as items that modify gear, it’s always good to have some on you—if not a lot. One of those orbs is the Orb of Transmutation, which upgrades normal gear to magic rarity. If you’re in need of them, here are a few ways you can farm this particular PoE orb.

A Little Bit of Magic

Why the Orb of Transmutation? After all, it’s not like magic gear is often used in high-level play anyway. The thing is, it has a purpose. For example, if there is a base normal item that you happen to like or find particularly viable to your build, you can use an Orb of Transmutation on it in order to give it a modifier. You can then upgrade it to Rare once you get one to your liking. It goes without saying that this process is tedious and will cost you a lot of Orbs of Transmutation, but it’s a good way of getting your preferred combination of mods on gears.
To make the most out of your Orbs of Transmutation, wait until you get to the endgame. That’s when you’re going to get quality normal gear, which will be a good base when turned to magic or rare items.

However, if you have no plans of going through something that painstaking, you can simply use it as currency when trading with other players. You can also use the Orb of Transmutation in a recipe to purchase the following items:

• Scroll of Wisdom x 4 – 1 Orb of Transmutation
• Agate Amulet – 1 Amber Amulet, 1 Lapis Amulet, 1 Orb of Transmutation
• Turquoise Amulet – 1 Jade Amulet, 1 Lapis Amulet, 1 Orb of Transmutation
• Citrine Amulet – 1 Amber Amulet, 1 Jade Amulet, 1 Orb of Transmutation

RNG with Orb of Transmutation: Yes or No?

But if you’re the kind who wants to push his or her luck, you can use the Orb of Transmutation to buy a wide variety of unidentified magic items. Hopefully you get something impressive. On the other hand, if what you’re crafting needs further upgrading, you can buy an Orb of Augmentation from Nessa for the price of 4 Orbs of Transmutation. It’s probably an unfair trade on your end, but hey, it’s worth it when you got extra Orbs of Transmutation and are in dire need of an Orb of Transmutation.
Lastly, if you’re not the type that wants to rely on RNG in putting mods on a particular piece of gear, you can put low-level affixes on items through crafting benches provided by Forsaken Masters. It’s not recommended for higher levels, but at least you’ll have competent gear during the leveling process.

Getting the Orbs

If you’re not actively farming Orbs of Transmutation but are in need of one, you can just keep the Transmutation Shards you acquire. Since you sell unidentified magic and rare items on a regular basis to ensure you have inventory space, you’ll have a steady stream of Transmutation Shards. Once you get 20 of them, combine them in order to make one Orb of Transmutation. You can also obtain an Orb of Transmutation from Nessa by giving her 7 Portal Scrolls in exchange. It’s kind of a steal, honestly.
The Orb of Transmutation is one PoE Currency that you’ll need to have a lot of—and for good reason! Thus, it’s important to get as much as you can; good thing it’s not particularly difficult to get.
